Behavior and Reproductive Status of Microsepsis armillata (Diptera: Sepsidae) Flies Away from Oviposition Sites

چکیده

The mystery of where virgin female Microsepsis armillata (Melander & Spuler) copulatehasbeensolvedwith thediscoveryof sexual activity in small aggregations that arenot tightly associated with the oviposition sites, where matings have been observed previously in this and other sepsid species. Nonvirgin females also mate in these aggregations, and matings at such sites may help explain the otherwise puzzling variations in male precopulatory riding behavior in other sepsids. Approximately 25% of the unpaired females in aggregations carried an unlaid egg in her bursa, and larvae had hatched from some of these eggs. Retention of a bursal egg could prevent intromission by males.

Species-specific genitalic copulatory courtship in sepsid flies (Diptera, Sepsidae, Microsepsis) and theories of genitalic evolution.

Males of Microsepsis eberhardi and M. armillata use their genitalic surstyli to rhythmically squeeze the female's abdomen with stereotyped movements during copulation. Squeezing movements did not begin until intromission had occurred and, contrary to predictions of the conflict-of-interest hypothesis for genitalic evolution, did not overcome morphological or behavioral female resistance. Contra...

Hidden in the urban parks of New York City: Themira lohmanus, a new species of Sepsidae described based on morphology, DNA sequences, mating behavior, and reproductive isolation (Sepsidae, Diptera)

New species from well-studied taxa such as Sepsidae (Diptera) are rarely described from localities that have been extensively explored and one may think that New York City belongs to this category. Yet, a new species of Themira (Diptera: Sepsidae) was recently discovered which is currently only known to reside in two of New York City's largest urban parks. Finding a new species of Themira in th...

Social and reproductive behaviour in the Madagascan poison frog, Mantella laevigata, with comparisons to the dendrobatids

I present the first behavioural study of natural populations of a Madagascan poison frog. Focal watches of marked individuals were conducted for 925 h, in five populations, across two seasons. Like the New World dendrobatids, these diurnal anurans eat ants and are aposematically coloured. Data are presented that provide additional instances of convergence with the dendrobatids, including (1) ex...

Physical factors influencing the oviposition of Lutzomyia migonei (Diptera: Psychodidae) in laboratory conditions.

To determine the influence of physical factors on oviposition of Lutzomyia migonei (Diptera: Psychodidae) under laboratory conditions, two sets of experiments were performed. The first test was to determine the influence of the size of pots on oviposition. Gravid flies were placed individually or in groups in different oviposition pots. The number of eggs laid, oviposition time and survival of ...

Standardized laboratory tests with 21 species of temperate and tropical sepsid flies confirm their suitability as bioassays of pharmaceutical residues (ivermectin) in cattle dung.

Veterinary pharmaceuticals excreted in the dung of treated livestock can have strong non-target effects on the dung organism community. We report results of ecotoxicological tests with ivermectin for 21 species of temperate (Europe, North America) and tropical (Asia, Central America) black scavenger flies (Diptera: Sepsidae), using standardized methods developed previously for the yellow dung f...
